Domestic

I love the 'Sunday' (weekend) roast. Every time I cook it, chicken or lamb, I spent the next day dreaming about left over sandwiches, pumpkin pasta sauce and potato and caramalised onion quiche...I don't think there'll be enough meat this time to cover a stew, but we'll see...

In other news, my favourite game is officially 'two kittens, one spoon'

Read this book. Immediately.

I am considering making Our Daily Meds by Melody Peterson a pre-req for joining this community.

The day after admitting he killed a woman and dumped her body on a rural road, a St. Catharines, Ont., man was released from jail.

Judge Stephen Glithero sentenced Wayne Ryczak, 55, to one day in jail on Thursday for the death of 29-year-old Stephine Beck.

The one-day sentence is in addition to time Ryczak already served since his March 5, 2007, arrest — time the judge said was equivalent to 30 months.

“Devastated, we’re devastated,” Beck’s mother, Alice Dort, said from her home in Nova Scotia shortly after a police detective broke the news by phone. “This is just so unbelievable.” “There’s no justice. None whatsoever. I’m just so disgusted.”

Sometimes I think we haven't got any further, we just think there are less of "those" women in the westen model.

Painting in Progress

  • May. 18th, 2008 at 1:07 PM
Has been 10 years since I've painted, so initially I was a little daunted. Seems you never forget. Has also been great to be around a group of painters.

This is the original photo I am working from.

And this is the painting so far.

My Inner Nerd Is Pleased

Ren Faire was fabulous this year. I would have dressed up, but considering it was OVER 100 FUCKING DEGREES today with no clouds, I decided against it. Elliott wore his Keepers of the Templar tabard and cloak.
We walked around a lot, checking out some of the amazing costumes people had. I took a picture of a guy who had the most awesome Link from Zelda costume. I also took a picture of a guy who was walking around with the most GORGEOUS horned owl I had ever seen.
We played this fun game called Cathedrals that's kind of like Tetris, medieval style. I helped him complete these quests that were there, just like in WoW. A lot of food and many bottles of water to keep from dehydrating.
I started crashing and we relaxed by the food court, watching this girl dance on long things of fabric. When I went to get something cool to eat, I ran into Tristan, an old friend from high school. He didn't recognize me at first, but we talked for a bit, filling each other in on what had happened in the last few years. Swapped phone numbers and parted ways.
My lungs ACHE. I had forgotten how smoggy Glendale was. It makes my city look like the Colorado mountain air. But, it was fucking awesome and I'm happy I got to go with my best friend. ^-^

This was the first time I did decorative flossing and I just love the effect. I think I'll have to do this on all of my corsets from now on... Comments anyone?

Have a look-see!

I wish I could say something eloquent, something profound, but I sit there, staring at the article, wondering how, how could you do that to your own flesh and blood, how loving someone can be twisted into reason for murder?

We have a live one, ladies and gentlemen:

(context is for pansies, but it's Nathan's post about the gay gene)

There will be no problem with the "abortion rights" movement. It might lose some of its homosexual supporters, which is great, but I don't think it will be enough to make a dent, because the real supporters of abortion are heterosexual women who feel it is their "right" to have sex whenever they want with whomever they please for whatever reason while being able to ignore the responsibilities that come along with that "right", and heterosexual men who want to use those women with no accountability to anyone for their actions whatsoever. That's their core, and will remain as such indefinitely, even after any law might be passed to give the kind of stigma and retribution the idea 'pleasure is more important than the minor misfortune of killing people' truly deserves.

I lack the vantage point of being homosexual to view this issue. All I can see it as is as a woman, and frankly, it makes me depressed and angry. It will always boil down to them just saying, "Women should be able to do whatever they want! My body, my choice! These putrid masses of mucus and cells are not people. Why? Because I decided they weren't so I can kill them, because I might not ENJOY my life as much if I have to spend my time and money on someone else. You just want me to breed at gunpoint, you sickos!!1! YOU HATE WOMEN!!1!!!!1!11!11!" Which is kind of funny, because as time goes by, I find that at least one thing they say begins to hold more and more weight. I do find myself hating other women. Any group which would protest en masse so ferociously to be allowed to kill their offspring is one that I am loathe to be a part of, and I am a woman. I have no choice in that matter. I wish that I could love and embrace my femininity, but they make it almost impossible for me. But even the one time they might have something right, they've gotten it horribly wrong. I don't want abortion to be illegal because I hate women. I hate women because abortion is legal.

WHOA NELLY.

YOUR MOVEMENT IS THE NICE ONE HUH. WOW.

eta: Because theirs is not only the "nice" movement, but also the "chickenshit" movement (except when bombing clinics), the craziness has been screencapped for your convenience. My apologies about the quality, imageshack is like that. The comment is still up, but who knows how long that'll last, amirite?

On "choosing" whiteness

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 4:54 PM
The idea that "whiteness" as an identity is something that an individual can choose to embrace or reject is purely a product of white privilege.

It is philosophically founded on identity as the product of individual choice rather than societal assignment. The idea is itself manifestly false. I am white not because I have chosen to be white, but because society has coded me as white. I am white because, being coded as white, I am afforded white privilege.[1]

Part of the white privilege I am afforded is the ability to ignore the fact that I am afforded white privilege in a thousand ways every day, even if I explicitly act to nullify every aspect of white privilege under my control. Cops will not pull me over for driving while black if I reject my whiteness. Employers will not quietly discriminate against me if I reject my whiteness. I won't start getting worse service in stores, or followed around be security, if I reject my whiteness. ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

I also won't suddenly stop having the racist attitudes that come as a consequence of having the privilege of not understanding all the privileges I am afforded. I won't suddenly stop exercising the privileges I exercise by reflex because I don't realize they're the product of privilege. That stuff is the product of work, and I cannot do that work if I don't explicitly acknowledge that I am coded as white and shine a spotlight on it each and every time it tries to crawl into a corner and operate unseen.

All that happens if I reject my whiteness is I get to feel good about myself because I'm pretending to strike a blow for racial justice when in reality all I'm doing is complying with white supremacy and hiding it with a thin coat of paint, secure in the knowledge that not one consequence of being coded non-white that befalls people of color every day will come to my doorstep. The racetraitor folks put themselves at more risk when they can, but to be a racetraitor is to specifically embrace being white.[2]

That's white privilege. It's white privilege because it perpetuates white privilege. It's white privilege because people of color don't get to pretend they're not coded as people of color. That's a good way to get killed, and that's no exaggeration even in this day and age.

And now it's debunked, and that's what we're here to do in [info]debunkingwhite

[1] Because I am Jewish, there are times and places where I was specifically coded as "not-white." In those times and places, specific structures such as the judenstern and ghettos were instituted to get around my people's light skin. The United States in the twenty-first century is not one of those places, so let's have no foolishness on that front.

[2] Else, what is there to betray?
